About MyCDLPractice
MyCDLPractice exists because too many CDL practice test sites are bloated with paywalls, mandatory sign-ups, intrusive ads stuffed into every paragraph, and questions copied straight from the official manual without any context. We thought drivers deserved better — a free, focused study aid that respects your time.
Who we are
MyCDLPractice is published by the team behind a state-licensed commercial truck driving school in the Los Angeles County area. Running a real CDL school is our primary business, and this site grew out of the study material we built for our own students.
We've spent years on the operational side of CDL training — running classes, working with the California DMV, helping applicants prepare for both the written and skills tests, and watching the same study-material gaps trip up students year after year.
That hands-on background is the reason this site exists. We've sat through enough first-attempt failures to know which topics actually catch people out, which Manual passages get skimmed, and what the difference looks like between a student who memorizes answers and a student who understands the regulation. That knowledge informs every practice test on this site.
What this site is
A free, no-account-required practice test platform covering every CDL endorsement: General Knowledge (Class A and Class B), Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, HAZMAT, Tanker, Doubles/Triples, Passenger, School Bus, and Pre-Trip Inspection.
Every practice test is written from the same source material the states use to write their actual exams: the FMCSA Commercial Driver's License Manual. Each question includes a short explanation so you actually learn the rule instead of just memorizing the answer for one question. Each test reshuffles questions on every attempt, so you can take the same test repeatedly and get a different ordering each time.
What this site is not
We are not the FMCSA. We are not your state DMV. We are not a CDL training school, and passing one of our practice tests is not a substitute for the actual licensing process. We are a study aid — the same kind of help you'd get from a friend quizzing you at the kitchen table. Practice doesn't guarantee passing. It just means you're better prepared than you were yesterday.
Federal regulations require entry-level CDL applicants to complete FMCSA-registered Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from an approved provider before sitting for the CDL skills test. MyCDLPractice does not provide ELDT — we are a written-test study aid only. For ELDT certification, we recommend ELDT365, an FMCSA-registered theory training program operated by an affiliated company.
Where our questions come from
Our question bank is paraphrased from the FMCSA Commercial Driver's License Manual — the same source material every state DMV uses to build the actual written exam. Each question is rewritten in plain English, paired with explanation text, and tagged to a topic so you can track which areas of the Manual you're weakest on.
We do not copy questions directly from the official state exams. We don't claim to "leak" or "predict" DMV questions. Anyone advertising those services is either selling something misleading or violating copyright law. Our value is in the explanation quality, the topic coverage, and the ability to retest until the material sticks.
Where state-specific variation exists (especially in the School Bus and HAZMAT topics), we note it and recommend checking your state's CDL Manual for state-specific rules. The core federal material is the same across all 50 states.
How we keep this site free
Two ways. First, we run a small number of unobtrusive ads through Google AdSense. We deliberately keep ad density low — readability matters more to us than ad revenue.
Second, we partner with two affiliated services that drivers genuinely need at different points in their CDL journey: ELDT365 for FMCSA-registered ELDT theory training (legally required before your CDL skills test) and CDLSpot for finding a CDL school near you. We link to both naturally where they're relevant. We don't sell email lists, we don't run aggressive popups, and we don't have a paid tier.
Editorial standards
Every practice test and study guide on this site is written, reviewed, and updated by people with direct CDL training and operations experience. When federal regulations change — for example, FMCSA's 2022 ELDT mandate update or periodic HAZMAT placard rule revisions — we update our content. When a user reports an unclear or incorrect question, we review and revise.
If you find a typo, an outdated rule, or a question whose explanation doesn't quite match the current FMCSA Manual, please email us or use the contact form. We take corrections seriously and we'd rather fix a bad question than defend it.
Privacy and data
We don't require an account to use this site, and we don't collect personally identifying information for the practice tests. Anonymous traffic analytics help us understand which questions are too hard or too easy, but they're not tied to identifiable users. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
