Frequently Asked Questions

About the practice tests

Is MyCDLPractice really free?

Yes. Every practice test on the site is free, with no sign-up, account, or credit card required. The site is supported by partner referrals and a small number of unobtrusive ads.

Are these the exact questions on my state's CDL test?

No. State CDL exams pull from the same FMCSA CDL Manual our questions are modeled on, but exact wording is different. Practicing here teaches you the rules — the rules are what gets tested, not the specific phrasing.

Do you store my answers or progress?

No accounts, no individual tracking. We use anonymous analytics to understand traffic patterns, nothing tied to you personally.

Can I retake a practice test?

As many times as you want. Each retake pulls a fresh randomized set of questions, so you'll see different ones each time.

Are explanations included?

Yes. After answering each question, you'll see the correct answer along with a short explanation of the rule behind it. That's the part that actually helps you learn.

About the CDL exam itself

What is the passing score on the CDL test?

Most U.S. states require 80% on each section of the CDL written exam. Some states require 80% on each individual endorsement section as well. Check your state DMV's site for specifics.

How many questions are on the actual CDL test?

It varies by state and endorsement. The General Knowledge test typically has 50 questions. Endorsement tests range from 20 to 30 questions each. Pre-Trip Inspection is administered separately as a verbal exam.

Do I need ELDT before taking my CDL?

Yes. ELDT (Entry-Level Driver Training) theory is required by the FMCSA before you can take the CDL skills test for Class A, Class B, or any of the H, P, S endorsements. ELDT365 is FMCSA-registered for online ELDT theory training.

How long is a CDL permit valid?

Most states issue a CDL permit valid for 180 days. You must hold it for at least 14 days before you can take the skills test. Permit rules vary by state.

What endorsements should I get?

It depends on what you'll be hauling. HAZMAT pays more but requires a TSA background check. Tanker, Doubles/Triples, and Air Brakes are common for OTR work. Passenger and School Bus are for those endorsements specifically. Combination is required for any Class A.
