How MyCDLPractice Works
Most CDL practice test sites make you create an account, hand over an email, sit through a sign-up funnel, and then hit a paywall the moment you want to see more than five questions. We don't do any of that. Every test on this site is free, every question comes with an explanation, and you can retake any test as many times as you want. This page explains how the site works, where the questions come from, and — because you should always ask this about a free site — how we keep the lights on.
The short version
Pick an endorsement from the Practice Tests page. Each test pulls a randomized set of exam-style multiple-choice questions from our bank — one question per screen on mobile, big tap targets, no squinting. The moment you answer, you see whether you got it right and, more importantly, the rule behind the question. When you can hit 90% on multiple attempts in a row, you're ready to schedule the real thing at your DMV. Most states pass at 80%; practicing to 90% gives you a cushion for test-day nerves.
Where our questions come from
This is the part most practice sites won't tell you, usually because the answer is "we scraped them from somewhere." Ours is different, and it's the reason this site exists at all.
The team behind MyCDLPractice runs a licensed CDL school in the Los Angeles area and ELDT365, an FMCSA-registered online theory training provider. Our question bank is written against the same source material every state builds its exam from — the FMCSA's model CDL manual sections — and shaped by what we see in the classroom: the wording that confuses people, the rules students mix up, the topics that sink first attempts. When a question keeps getting missed for the wrong reason (confusing phrasing rather than a hard rule), we rewrite it. When a regulation changes, the affected questions get updated or retired. Every question carries a plain-language explanation, because memorizing answer letters gets you nowhere on the real exam — the state tests the same rule with different wording. If you can say why an answer is right in your own words, you'll pass. The tests also run in Spanish — use the EN/ES toggle in the header and questions and explanations switch over (anything not yet translated shows in English rather than blank).
Why it's free
No mystery here. We run two related services: ELDT365, which provides the FMCSA-required entry-level theory training you must complete before your CDL skills test, and CDLSpot, a directory of thousands of CDL schools. Some of the people who practice here end up needing one or both, and we point you to them where it's genuinely the next step. That's the business model. The practice tests themselves have no upsell — no locked questions, no premium tier — and we'd rather you pass using the free tests and never spend a dime than pretend the good questions are behind a paywall. The site may also show ads to help cover hosting.
How to actually use the tests
Don't grind the same test back-to-back until the questions look familiar — familiarity is not the same as knowing the rule. A better loop: take a full test cold, note which topics you missed (not which questions), read that section of your state's CDL manual, then retest. Our questions and your state manual draw from the same FMCSA source material, so they reinforce each other. If you keep missing air brake questions, twenty minutes in the manual's air brakes section beats another hour of quiz repetition.
The 90% rule: when you can score 90% or better on three consecutive attempts — with the questions reshuffling every time — book your DMV appointment. Below that, test-day nerves can eat your margin over the 80% pass line.
What we don't do
We don't require an account, so there's no profile of you to build. We don't email you, because we never asked for your email. We don't guarantee you'll pass — nobody honestly can, and our terms say so plainly. And we're not affiliated with the FMCSA or any state DMV; we're a study aid built by people who teach this material every week.
