Doubles / Triples

Required to pull two or three trailers. Covers coupling, uncoupling, and safe operation.

Acerca del examen de Doubles / Triples

The Doubles/Triples endorsement (T) is required to pull more than one trailer. Doubles are common across the western and central US, especially for LTL freight. Triples are legal only in certain states and on certain highways. The handling of multi-trailer combinations is different enough that the federal government requires this separate endorsement. About 20 questions, 80% to pass.

Lo que vemos en clase

With doubles and triples the trap is treating them like one long trailer. They behave nothing like it, and the test stays focused on the specific dangers of pulling more than one box.

Air has to reach all the way to the back. After you couple, you confirm air actually flows to the rearmost trailer before you move. A rear trailer with no brakes is exactly the hazard the test wants you to catch.

Order matters. The heaviest trailer goes right behind the tractor and lighter ones toward the rear. The converter dolly that links them is its own coupling job with its own checks.

The rear trailer exaggerates everything you do up front. A small steering input becomes a bigger sway at the back, which is why the rear trailer is the one most likely to roll. Smooth, gradual steering is most of the battle.

Qué se cubre

Crack-the-Whip

Each articulation point (fifth wheel, dolly, second dolly) amplifies steering inputs. A small steering correction up front can produce large lateral movement at the rear trailer. The rearmost trailer of a triple can swing several feet in response to a gentle correction. This is the most important concept on the test.

Converter Dollies

A dolly is a single-axle device with its own fifth wheel that connects the lead trailer to the rear trailer. Inspect the drawbar, fifth wheel plate, jaws, and safety chains. The drawbar connects to the pintle hook on the lead trailer. Safety chains must be present and functional in case the pintle hook fails.

Coupling Sequence

Strict order: tractor to lead trailer first, dolly behind lead trailer, dolly-to-lead pintle connection, lead-to-dolly air and electrical, lead-to-dolly safety chains, rear trailer to dolly fifth wheel, dolly-to-rear air and electrical. Tug-test each connection. Visually inspect every kingpin engagement.

Weight Order

Heaviest trailer goes immediately behind the tractor. Lighter trailers go in the rear. A heavy trailer pushed by a light trailer behind it creates instability. In a triple combination, the order is heavy-medium-light from front to rear.

Air Pressure and Inspection

Air takes longer to reach the rear trailers. Brake response is slower, and the system needs longer to rebuild pressure after a hard application. Don't ride the brakes — let the system recover or the spring brakes can lock on across all trailers and cause a jackknife. Pre-trip inspection on a triple can take 30+ minutes.

Consejos para aprobar

  • Lower your speed in turns and curves — crack-the-whip multiplies cornering forces.
  • Add following distance beyond what you'd use on a single trailer.
  • Plan lane changes far in advance and execute smoothly. Sudden lane changes can swing the rear trailer into adjacent lanes.
  • Aim for 90%+ on consecutive attempts. Focus your study on coupling sequence and weight order rules.

Errores comunes en el examen de Doubles/Triples

Estos son los temas que hacen tropezar a la gente una y otra vez — tanto en nuestras aulas como en los intentos de práctica. Léelos con cuidado antes de volver a presentar el examen.

  • Getting the weight order backwards. Heaviest goes immediately behind the tractor, not in the rear. This is the most common test mistake.
  • Forgetting safety chains on the dolly. They're a backup in case the pintle hook fails — required and inspected.
  • Treating doubles like a longer single trailer. The crack-the-whip effect means a double behaves nothing like a single — small inputs become large outputs at the rear.
  • Riding the brakes on long descents with triples. Brake lag plus the time needed to rebuild pressure makes this especially dangerous with multi-trailer combinations.
  • Underestimating pre-trip time. A triple-trailer pre-trip can take 30+ minutes if done properly. The test rewards drivers who treat the full inspection seriously.

Cómo usar este examen de práctica

Our Doubles/Triples practice test draws from the same FMCSA source material your state's official CDL manual uses. Take the test as many times as you need — questions reshuffle on every attempt. After each question you'll see whether your answer was correct, the explanation, and a reference to the topic so you can study it deeper.

Preguntas frecuentes

Sobre el examen de práctica CDL de Doubles / Triples

Where are triples legal?

Triples are legal only in certain western and central states (such as Utah, Nevada, Kansas, Oklahoma, and others) and only on specific highways. Doubles are legal in all states with some length restrictions.

What is the difference between a Rocky Mountain double and a turnpike double?

Rocky Mountain doubles pair a longer lead trailer with a shorter rear trailer. Turnpike doubles use two long trailers — typically only legal on specific turnpike highways. Both require the Doubles/Triples endorsement.

Do I need a special CDL class for doubles?

No. The Doubles/Triples endorsement (T) is added to a Class A CDL. You take it along with General Knowledge, Combination Vehicles, and Air Brakes.

Is crack-the-whip really that dangerous?

Yes. The rearmost trailer of a triple can swing several feet in response to a small steering input up front. That's the central concept of the test and the reason this endorsement exists separately.
